DOG CRITIQUE

'Unfortunately there are a few things that need watching as there were quite a few very light eyes which are highly undesirable. The Standard calls for a dark hazel eye, also a good straight front was something that could be taken for granted in an English Springer years ago. Some exhibits were pinning and I saw a few very wide fronts. Hind action on the whole seems to have improved. Another custom that seems to have crept in, is showing the dogs on a tight lead 'terrier fashion'. Springers move a lot better and are happier on a loose lead, in some cases the dogs were moved at such a fast pace and were strung up so tightly by the neck that their feet hardly touched the floor, this makes assessing their movement an almost impossible task and completely spoils their expression. | Presentation on the whole was good but some exhibits had the tops of the ears machined down for the first few inches and then the long fringing begins immediarely below that. Ears should be nicely feathered, graduating evenly from the top. The finger and thumb method should be used to thiin out the hair and not clippers It is plain to see where clippers have been used as the hair grows back much lighter than the hair on the rest of the leathers.'
