ESSC Open

First I must thank the officers and committee for giving me the opportunity to judge our lovely breed at their open show this year. I thank them for the warm welcome, award winning hospitality and providing the hard working stewarding team. A huge thank you to the exhibitors for providing a quality entry, allowing me to judge their dogs, taking my decisions sportingly and for turning out on such a horrible wet and windy day, it was all greatly appreciated and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

MPD 1
1 Topliss' Lordsett Unforgiven at Beresford
7 month L/W, Very masculine head, well balanced with good depth of muzzle and ears set low. A good length neck set on well angled shoulders. His body will alter greatly as he grows but at this time I just felt he was a bit narrow all through. He has great density of bone, length of leg and tight feet. He was a bit in awe of the surroundings today, just learning his craft, but once he got going, moved ok. BPD

11 month B/W, A different type to one, with many equal qualities. He has a well proportioned head piece with great dark eyes, and kind expression. Good length of neck into reasonably angled shoulders. Not the forechest and depth of one, and I was disappointed with the width of ribcage, but he is short in loin, has a firm bottom, is well muscled, has a good bend of stifle, and his tail is well set on. He moved well although very close behind.

2yrs L/W/T, Very solid structural dog. Pleasing masculine head of good proportions, lovely dark eye, kind expression and ears set low. He has a strong thick neck, well angled shoulder placement, elbows tucked in, lovely fore chest and depth of body. His top line is level, well sprung and rounded ribcage and short loin. He has a well muscled back end, great thickness of thigh and turn of stifle, which provided a powerful rear movement. His legs are of good length, nice round bone and stands on tight feet. He stood in good coat and was well presented.

PGD 2
1 Jacksons Mompesson Winchester
2yrs L/W, A well balanced masculine head for length and depth, back scull not too wide, lovely dark eye, soft expression and ears set low. He has a strong and lengthy neck, great straight front, and super shoulder angulation with bones of equal length. A prominent fore chest, well sprung and rounded ribcage, good depth of body all through, a little too short in loin for overall balance, but finished with a strong back end, well rounded bottom, thighs muscled, good bend of stifle and short hocks. He moved steadily with powerful drive but was a bit choppy in front. Good coat and presentation.
2 Happs Jorobaden Ballaragas
2yrs L/W, Very unfortunate to meet one today but I am sure he could change places in the future, very different and a good old fashioned style of springer. I liked his masculine head, good length and depth of fore face, width of muzzle, a little too wide on top of his skull, but good eye colour and shape. Ears well set. He has a good length of neck, well angled shoulder placement, plenty of fore chest, good depth of chest, and elbows tucked in. His rib cage is well developed, he has ample length of loin, level top line, a powerful back end and well set tail. Lovely turn of stifle and well muscled thighs. He has good round bone and length of leg but I was disappointed with his flat feet. He moved well once settled.

3yrs L/W, A dog I like very much and have judged before who is maturing well. Handsome masculine equal proportioned balanced head, dark eyes in unison with his jacket, giving soft but alert expression. He has a strong neck of ample length, my main criticism is he is very throaty and if not gathered up does spoil his profile. He has a decent lay of shoulder, his front is straight, plenty of fore chest and depth of body all through. His elbows are tight to his ribcage which is well rounded. He has plenty of bone, legs of good length and stands on tight feet. He is a bit longer in loin than I would like for overall balance. His bottom is well rounded and muscled as his thighs. He can give the impression of being over angulated on the rear when placed, but looked better when stood naturally, following a powerful drive around the ring. Very workman like and well presented.
2 Drinkalls Momppesson Tribute of Esscroft
6yrs L/W, another dog I have had the pleasure of judging before and wow how he has improved with maturity. Masculine well balanced headpiece, plenty of width, depth and workings. Ears set correctly. His neck is strong and has plenty of length but it looked stuffy today as he was carrying some extra pounds over his shoulders. His shoulder placement is adequate, neither upright or over angulated. He has a prominent fore chest and great depth of ribcage and body all through. His legs are of good length and have decent bone. He doesn’t have the best feet and has a habit of standing ten to two. He has a lovely level top line, good length of loin and a well set tail. His rear end complementing the front in angulation, well rounded and muscled. He moved well with drive. Well presented.

2yrs L/W, what a fabulous make and shape and worthy champion. Masculine head, balanced in width and depth, dark eyes of good shape, ears well set and soft alert expression. Strong neck of good length, shoulders have equal length of bone and great angulation. Front is straight, legs of good length are well under the body and elbows tight standing on great round tight and plushy feet. Another with a great fore chest, depth of ribcage and body all through. His ribs are well sprung, he has a level top line well set tail and good length of loin. His rear angulation complements the front, his bottom is nicely rounded and thighs muscled. His hocks are short and straight when stood naturally, but when stacked I dislike the handlers habit of pushing the backend down which at times makes it all wrong! Moved well. RBD

5yrs B/W, A completely different make and shape, nevertheless another worthy champion. I find him a bit feminine all through but have to say he has matured greatly since I last judged him. His head is balanced in length, width and depth, he has a gorgeous black eye colour giving that wonderful soft expression. He is a little throaty, has a decent length of neck and straight front. He has less shoulder angulation than 1 although adequate and his fore chest not as pronounced. He has good depth to his chest, elbows tight and stands on a good length of leg and tight rounded feet. His top line is level and his rear complements the front. He moves straight fore and aft with drive. He was presented in good coat and cracking condition.

7yrs L/W Another worthy champion and just my cup of tea today – He is a lovely size, standing he makes a great shape, when he moves is straight, positive and drives looking like he’d go all day. He is masculine in head, well balanced length, width and depth. He has dark almond shaped eyes, very alert and attentive. He has an adequate length of neck although his markings can deceive, well placed shoulders with good angulation. His front is straight, elbows tight, plenty of fore chest and depth. He has good bone, length of leg and tight feet. His ribs are well rounded, loin of good length and top line is level. He has a firm rounded bottom, well set tail, muscled thighs lovely angulation and short straight hocks. When this dog moved he powered round in a controlled manner. His coat was not overdone and well presented, a credit to his owners. BD & BVIS

7yrs L/W Another lovely worthy champion, larger in frame to my winner. This dog has a beautifully shaped head, dark eyes and melting expression. His neck is elegant in length yet strong. His front angulation is adequate, his chest deep with a decent fore chest. He has good bone, balanced leg length and tight feet. He is longer cast than 1, has a level top line and a well set tail. Compared to his front I find him over angulated in the rear which showed today when he moved, driving from the rear pushing the front up out of the way. To be fair this dog would move better outside in more space as he just wants to go with his lengthy stride. Well presented.

7 mth L/W Lovely sweet chunky out going puppy. Balanced head, plenty of stop, dark almond eyes and well set ears. Strong adequate length of neck although a bit throaty, lovely shoulder angulation, legs set well under chest. Nice fore chest, deep ribcage, standing on well boned legs of good length and tight feet. She has a great symmetry in length and depth of body, not too long in the loin, level top line and well set tail. Her hind quarters complement the front in angulation. She moves well steady and straight. Reminding me a lot of springers in the past. BPB & BPIS

13 mth L/W, very feminine young lady, sweet head, balanced, ample stop and dark eye. She has a good length of neck, I would have preferred a little more angulation to the shoulders although the bones are of equal length. She has a good depth to her chest, length to her legs, decent bone and stands on neat feet. Her ribs need to spring, she has a good length of loin, level top line and well set tail. Her rear quarters are well worked, but like the front, I would prefer more angulation. Movement was very choppy today and far too fast, you really could do to slow her down.

12 mth L/W, just out of puppy, and being a handful today. Sweet feminine head, balanced in length and width, her eyes are almond in shape but need to darken and ears well set. She has ample length to her neck and a fair angulation to her shoulders. She has a straight front, good bone, nice length of leg and tight neat feet. Her body could be deeper and I found her too long in back and loin. Her hind quarters complement her front in angulation, she has a nicely rounded bottom, good tail set and is well muscled. For me her hocks are too long and she moved very erratically.

18 mth B/W, lovely feminine bitch with a great symmetrical body shape. Feminine headpiece with equal lengths to foreface and scull but found her a bit narrow through the width which was disappointing. Lovely dark eye, soft expression and well set ears. She has a decent length to her neck, well placed shoulder of good angulation. She has plenty of fore chest, deep ribcage and body all through. Her elbows are tight. She has a good length to her legs and stands on neat feet. She has a level top line and well set tail. Her rear angulation complements the front with a nice bend of stifle. She has a rounded bottom, is well muscled and straight hocks. She moved well with drive.

2 yrs L/W, sweet feminine head, another that I found to be narrow through the width, although equal in length. She has a kind expression, her eyes are of almond shape, but I would like them a bit darker. She has a decent length of neck, moderately angled shoulders, deep chest and straight front. She stands on well boned legs of good length with neat feet. I would prefer a shorter body length in the loin to portray a more symmetrical profile. She has a level top line and well set tail, rounded bottom and complementary angled rear. She didn’t show a lot of enthusiasm on the move and was very close behind.

2 yrs B/W, beautiful bitch. Feminine head, equal lengths of foreface and scull with plenty of width and depth. Lovely dark almond shaped eyes giving that required melting expression you just want to slip inside. Her neck is well arched and of good length, shoulders equal and well placed. She has a decent fore chest and super depth of chest. Her elbows are tight and she stands on well boned legs of good length with neat tight feet. I loved her solid well shaped ribcage and depth of body all through. She has the required length of loin, a flowing level top line and nicely set tail. I liked her rear construction, nicely rounded bottom, decent bend of stifle, thighs muscled, and short hocks. She moved well, head held high, tail swishing with reach and drive. RBB, RBIS & B B/W.
2 Dunsdons Seaspring All At Sea
5 yrs L/W, very unlucky to meet with 1 in such fine fettle, nevertheless plenty to like about this bitch too. A solid old fashioned type which I like, but unfortunately for the breed, in my view, a disappearing occurrence. Her head may be a little on the strong side for a bitch but it is balanced in length, has a decent width and depth about it. Her eyes are a decent shape and dark in colour matching her jacket. She has a strong neck of good length and well placed shoulders with great angulation. Her front is straight, legs set well under her deep body, they are well off for bone and have neat feet. She is a trifle out of balance in length of body. She has a strong, well constructed rear. I liked the way she moved with drive. Unfortunately, she stood in her under-ware today but otherwise a nice bitch.

Wow what a cracking class – Thank you. I really enjoyed judging this one and can only split hairs on the day for my final decision, I really like all of them, and all capable of changing position on different occasions.

4 yrs L/W, really humbled to have this one put in front of me, I just loved her size, make, shape and constitution, beautiful. Her head is feminine, of equal length through the foreface and scull. She has a nice width and depth of muzzle, defined stop, chiselling beneath the eyes and fluting. Her eyes are of almond shape and dark in colour and ears well set. She has a strong slightly arched neck of adequate length. Her shoulders are well angulated and equal in bone length, her elbows tight, and she stands on well boned legs of good length with neat tight feet. She has plenty of fore chest, great depth of chest, spring of rib and short loin. Her top-line is a picture to be admired flowing from her head through to her well set tail. Her hind quarters are wide, strong, well muscled and angulated, finished with short hocks. When she moved around the ring she powered from behind with great drive without being close – an attribute of the breed, I feel we are loosing. Presentation – perfect. BB & BIS.

2 yrs L/W, A bitch I feel you need to get your hands on to appreciate as her markings deceive you. She has a pretty feminine head, equal length of foreface to skull, and plenty of depth in muzzle. Her stop not as defined as 1, but adequate. She has the darkest of eyes giving the required soft melting expression, but is alert and ready for action in an instant. The length of her neck is adequate, belied by the markings, muscular and strong. Her front assembly is great, with equal proportioned and angulated shoulders, front legs straight, well boned with neat feet and set well under her deep well sprung ribcage keeping her elbows tight. Her depth in body is carried right through and she is short in loin. She too has a powerful hind quarters, rounded bottom, good bend of stifle, a little longer in second thigh than 1 and short hocks. Her coat was in good order and well presented. She too has a great driving action, not too close on the move.

7 yrs young L/W. A lovely mature feminine bitch in absolutely beautiful bloom today. A fine feminine head of good proportions, dark almond shaped eyes giving a soft expression, and her ears are well set. Her neck is of adequate length and strong. I found her front angulation straighter than some, saying that her chest is deep with a well pronounced fore. Her ribs are well sprung and depth of body is carried right through. She is longer in loin than I would like, making the overall proportions unbalanced for me. She has well muscled hind quarters which equal the front for angulation. She stands on well boned legs and has neat tight feet. I feel she is too long in the hock which showed in her close rear movement.
