I couldn’t be more pleased with the Springers entered under me at GBAS. By the time I’d finished judging, I’d found consistency and depth of quality that really put a smile on my face. The exhibitors were in fine form too and all seemed to enjoy their day as much as I did. They were all very sportsperson-like and there was a great atmosphere all day.
I didn’t have to worry about concerns I’ve had from watching the breed elsewhere in the UK, where some breeders have tended to ignore the breed standard’s requirement for ‘highest on the leg and raciest in build of all the land spaniels’. Because none of those made the journey.
I was extremely impressed with my winners and the quality was so high there was no need to look to the younger ranks for top awards. That being said however, there were some really exciting youngsters, in both sexes, who will be pushing for top awards very, very soon.

1st SH CH LOCHINDORB CHIEF O'THE CLAN SHCM (MR R S & MRS M I NICOLSON)
A lovely dog to start off with! Very pleasing type of Springer. 7 years old L/W, balanced square outline. Good head and expression, strong topline and well off for bone. Nicely balanced quarters and correctly angled. Moved soundly, although I would like a little more purpose. Was unlucky to meet the other lovely veteran bitch.

1st EASTRIDING INVICTUS (MRS K JENKINSON)
L/W 8 ½ month old typy youngster. Balanced outline and a nice size. Well-proportioned head that is a little advanced for his age and he needs to grow into. Correct neck and well made front assembly. Needs to develop in chest. Good topline and loin, strong quarters. Well set tail. Good bone for age with lovely feet. Great temperament, very happy on the move. The type and framework are there and all he needs now is maturity, one for the future!

1st BETHRYN DEVIL MOON (IRISH JUN CH) (MS K & MISS B HOLT)
15 month L/W lad that is all Springer. Balanced, strong young dog with a symmetrical outline. Pleasing well balanced head, which should mature further. Dark eye with soft expression. Very good strong neck and well angulated front assembly. Strong compact body with a good topline and strong quarters. Plenty of bone. Good tailset. Well prepared correct coat. Moved happily with reach and drive. Appealed greatly and was considered for further awards but just needs to mature.
2nd MELVERLY TOP GEEZER (MR R J SMITH)
L/W Another well balanced typical springer. Good head, well angled shoulders and has plenty of bone. Compact body, with good topline and proper tailset. Would prefer less angle behind and not the confidence on the move of the winner.
3rd WESTAWAY DREAM ANGUS OF ROSANNOCH (IMP NOR) (MRS E ROSE)
L/W Very nice dog at the inbetween stage at present. Plenty to like both standing and moving. Once he matures and develops should be a really nice springer.

Three typical springers, all at different stages of development, which you expect in this age range.
1st MOMPESSON DEVONSHIRE (MR R W & MRS F JACKSON)
L/W/T Lovely old fashioned type of Springer. Strong and upstanding with well balanced outline. Nothing extreme or exaggerated. Definitely a male! Lovely well balanced head with good width and depth and pleasing expression. Good neck and shoulders, strong topline and good quarters and plenty of substance. Lovely bone and feet. In super coat. Pleasing on the move. Another I considered in the challenge.
2nd ART-WAVES STANDING OVATION FOR ALLENIE (IMP SWE) (MR R P & MRS C BOTT & SAVELL)
Another good dog of appealing type. Good head shape, well balanced with good depth of muzzle. At the moment he needs to darken in eye. Strong neck and good forehand, topline good with well angled quarters. Lovely length of hock. In excellent coat and condition. Just at the teenage stage at the moment, as his front is much more developed than his rear and he needs to fill in underneath.
3rd KENNAIR DREAMING ON A STAR (MRS N J MORGANS)
Another teenager, now up with the older dogs. Lovely type and shape, good outline and moves well. Now he just needs to darken more in eye, break a bit more in head, and develop in body, which should happen.

1st KENNAIR NORTHERN STAR (MRS N J MORGANS)
Upstanding B/W, well balanced masculine head with good expression. Good outline with a well made front assembly. The topline is strong and the hindquarters are well angulated with short length of hock. Lovely bone. His movement could improve coming and going. His coat was glorious, well presented, shining and weatherproof. Whilst many of this colour are of a different type, this lad wasn’t, he was the same type as the livers.

In full coat, correct and well presented. Close up to major winners.

2nd EASTRIDING ARMANI DIAMONDS (MRS K JENKINSON)
Different type to winner but plenty to like about this L/W. Needs a little more development in skull. Good neck flowing into shoulders, good topline, moderate quarters. Nice size and good outline. Plenty of bone. Would like a little more purpose when moving.

Beautiful class with three of the breeds top dogs. A pleasure to judge.
1st SH CH MOMPESSON WINCHESTER (MR R W & MRS F JACKSON)
Type wise this dog was completely what I was looking for. Strong, masculine and unexaggerated all through and of the Old School. Lovely head and expression, with plenty of width without coarseness. Correct length of neck, lovely front assembly with plenty of rib and fill under the elbows. Short loin. Strong quarters and great bone and feet. Plenty of animation on the move. CC and BOB and made the cut in a strong group.
2nd SH CH MELVERLY BUONA NOTTE (MR R J SMITH)
Very close decision. Slightly different type to winner. 3 years old L/W, well balanced, neat outline. Good head, eye and expression. Well made front assembly, with strong neck flowing into well placed shoulders. Well ribbed back, strong topline and good tailset. Correct, weatherproof coat. Would like to see a little less hind angulation. Moved happily. RES CC but was pushed hard by several others..
3rd SH CH PEASBLOSSOM JESTER (MR & MRS D MITCHELL)
L/W/T Another typical classy male. Elegant but masculine. Lovely head and eye. Flowing outline, well conformed all through. Super bone. Impressive on the move.

Four promising girls all at the teenage stage.
1st CALVDALE LOVE LETTERS (MR & MRS M CALVERT)
