Firstly my thanks to the committee of Manchester Dog Show Society for the invitation to judge and to my stewards for keeping me in order and on time. Thank you to all who entered and particularly to those who braved the weather to attend. I do understand the work that goes into keeping the dogs clean in bad weather so really appreciated every entry.

I do have a few concerns. The Breed Standard is quite specific and detailed in its description of an English Springer head and yet I found many that bore no resemblance to it at all. Long and narrow or overly strong skulls with weak muzzles were commonplace. The prevalence of light eyes too resulted in a few too many with less than desirable expressions.

Secondly there were a number of exhibits that seemed very narrow all through, looking okay in profile but all but disappeared when they turned towards you. The Standard suggests a dog of substance, with a strong, deep body and good ribs so this is something to watch perhaps.
Lastly, temperament. Again the Standard is crystal clear in its description and I could not make allowances for anything other than an outgoing and happy temperament. One or two exhibits lost out on higher places because of this, a great pity.

On the positive, presentation was good and almost all exhibits had been bathed. I thank you for that. Generally the dogs present were of good size and sound.

liver, white & tan baby with the sweetest head and expression. So feminine in outlook. Lovely size. Correct angulation and pleased me greatly in body length and substance. Moved with confidence.

smart liver and white puppy. Stronger all through than 1 with great bone and substance for age. Lovely tight feet. Short coupled. Pleasing head although stronger in skull and a fraction rounder in eye than 1.

my notes read ‘beautiful beautiful beautiful’. A picture stood and a pleasure to go over. Good bone and body which was compact and deep. She has the loveliest of heads. Good length of neck. In excellent condition. Loved her. Seriously considered her for CC but she had to give way to the Open Bitch winner today. BP & RCC.

slightly bigger bitch all round. Makes a very pleasing outline with a sweet head and lovely eye. Good bone and short-coupled. Not the front angulation or forechest of 1.

lovely bitch headed this superb class. She is the correct size, compact with excellent bone and angulation. Plenty of substance while still retaining femininity. Moved out really well and is so sound. Her head is pleasing if a fraction strong in back skull perhaps. Very good presentation. Liked her a lot.
2nd: 8903 EASTWOOD Ms D Roqfolly Miss Moneypenny JW
close up to 1. Exquisitely feminine bitch of lovely size. Head is sweet with good eye shape. Moderate and balanced in angulations. Top notch presentation – her coat absolutely gleamed. A fraction loose in front coming towards me but a super girl.

A truly lovely bitch, so well put together in every respect. She has substance and great bone but is still completely feminine. Loved her head, not overdone in anyway. Wonderful fit condition with great muscle tone helped her to power round the ring.
2nd: 8893 CORBETT Mrs A E Trimere Teresa Green
liver Tri bitch beautifully presented. Good size and compact. Would like a fraction more coat underneath to complete the picture. Lovely bone. Really excellent mover with great extension, reach and drive from the rear.

awarded her BP last time I judged and today she lived up to my expectations and some. Impeccably presented from every angle and in glorious condition. Petite, compact and feminine with the most divine head and expression. Plenty enough bone for her frame. Moved with confidence today to take her 3rd CC and BOB over the young male. Congratulations.
2nd: 8962 SMITH Mr R J Sh Ch Melverly Sophistique
top quality bitch with superb angulations, bone and substance. Not quite the femininity of 1 in head for me but looks both a picture on the stack and moves with strength and drive in true Springer fashion.
