NESSS Puppy & Veteran
NESSS BIS & RBIS

I was so honored to return to England to judge my second championship assignment. While the weather may have brought the judging indoors, it was a lovely day for English Springer Spaniels and their people in North Yorkshire. I would like to express my appreciation to the hard-working members of the Society. They made the experience a real joy. I would also like to thank all exhibitors for their kindness, good humor, and great sportsmanship. I enjoyed every moment.
General appearance and outline distinguishes our breed; Northern exhibitors will want to make sure that your Springers are not on a path to becoming square, or more upright in shoulder/overangulated “behind,” requiring length in the loin in order to move. Watch out for high rounded top skulls and tapered muzzles that narrow, causing a wedge-shaped appearance to the head. Beware of flat, splayed feet.
There were English Springers of excellent breed type and conformation throughout the entry. To the winning breeders and owners I offer a hearty “congratulations” because the breed remains safe in your capable hands. Please keep it that way, because I cannot wait to see what the future may bring for your lovely dogs.

1st - Topliss'- BERESFORD BLACK TIE
A single entry in his class, this upstanding, handsome b/w puppy enjoyed his trip around the ring.

PD
1st - Smith's - MELVERLY TOP GEEZER
First in one of the most competitive classes of the day, of great quality throughout. Beautiful to examine; everything where it belongs, standing on solid bone, strong pasterns, and excellent feet with deep pads. Correct leg-body proportions. Excellent return of upper arm and proper balance of fore-and-rear quarters. Moved correctly, easily, and happily. Correctly proportioned head. Watch this youngster; he is top caliber. Pushed his sire and his half-brother for the CC, actually.
2nd - Holt's - BETHRYN DEVIL MOON
Another good one in an excellent class that offered quality throughout. Well put together, standing on good bone and feet. Lovely blend of neck into shoulder and a correct short, strong back. Just less mature at this age than my first place puppy. Another one to watch.

An interesting young dog, beautifully presented. Appreciated his overall make and shape. Loves the show ring; handled it with attitude, reach, and drive. He needs maturing throughout and I hope I get the opportunity to see him all grown up.
2nd - Glendinning's - PLAIGLEN BEATERS BTRUE
Elegant young b/w dog with a pleasing outline. Carries a good deal of top coat without the presence of much undercoat at this age. Another that I would like to see at full maturity.

Balanced angles front and rear; nice and short in the loin; attractive head and a nice eye shape/placement/color. Many nice breed details on this youngster.

Saw this dog in the Junior Dog Class as well where he placed third. A substantially built dog with a pleasing, breed-typical outline. Could use a bit more neck and a bit less length in loin.

So much quality in my first and second place dogs; this was a real contest. My first place dog is a picture of overall excellence in a masculine, mature package. Proud to award him the CC and Best in Show. Correct leg/body proportions and balance; proper short back and loin. Moved truly and well because he can’t help it – he’s built to trot for hours. Carried himself utterly correctly on a loose lead. Strong bone; excellent, strong pasterns and deep pads. All the details I want to see. A pleasure to examine under the hand as his neck smoothly blends into his shoulders with proper return of upper arm. Strong second thigh on this dog; he is in solid condition. Pleasant, proper head and expression. This dog, and the youngster who won the Puppy Dog Class, are half brothers and similar under the hand in ways important to breeders.
2nd - Calvert's - CALVDALE ZERO TO HERO JW SHCM
Another excellent stallion of a Springer in great condition and form. Lovely head and expression; great length of neck; strong topline; correctly proportioned. The overall impression is that all the pieces are well and properly assembled. Also possesses an elegance about him both standing and on the move; an elusive and desirable quality in my opinion. Lovely, correct coat texture. My first place winner took the class based on just a wee bit more length and return of upper arm. Reserve CC.
