My thanks to the WKC committee for the invitation and to my two very efficient stewards. Apologies for the state of my attire at the end of judging in the sauna like conditions of the marquee. Heads seem to have improved to the point where there is less diversity. Eyes still vary from bright amber to the proper melting dark hazel the breed should have. By coincidence and to create a discussion point, I was looking at working ESS web sites the other day and noticed the wonderful colour and eye shape of our much derided industrious cousins, if they can do it……..?
Body shape and balance varies too, and with docked dogs becoming the rarity it is important that we maintain the unique spaniel shape. Long necks with the addition of long tails gives the breed a setter appearance which is totally alien. Some dogs were heavily penalised for total lack of muscle tone, which is such a shame as we can all correct this serious fault. Thank you to the exhibitors for your sportsmanship and to one in particular who was so delighted to receive her award that I can still hear her piercing scream ringing in my ears!!

L&W who is well up to size already. His angles are OK with good height to length ratio giving him the required shape. His head is masculine and balanced. Eye shape OK with colour still to darken. Has enough body and depth, with moderate rear angulation. He behaved himself enough to assess all parts on the move where his stride length was very good, however his front movement is currently loose and wide and yet to strengthen. I would also like to see more use of his tail. He was solid enough in the challenge where his more advanced body strength saw him out perform the puppy bitch ...BP

L&W. I know the temperament of this young dog well, but this is the first time out of puppy that I’ve had the chance to assess his maturing structure. He has a masculine head with deep flews, well balanced with the correct shape and eye colour. A correct length of neck into sloping shoulders, straight legs and ideal bone. His feet need to tighten. Slightly long cast body, however he is filling out nicely which will help with his balance. Super width of thigh and rear angulation, hocks could be let down better. He could have put a bit more into his movement, which was sound enough. He beat second on head shape and maturity.

L&W Dog of comparable size, but shorter in body. Not quite the expression of one, tighter in flew and eye needs to darken. Neck and shoulders in good shape, compact body, with excellent width over the loin. Nicely angulated rear and tail set. Held his top line on the move, however would like to see more tail action. He just needs time to mature

L&W nice head, masculine with excellent muzzle and good depth and chiselling under the eyes, which are correct shape and colour. Reachy neck leading to correct shoulder with good bone and tight feet. Beautifully balanced with good depth of rib and width over loin. Nicely muscled and angulated rear. Masses to like with no exaggeration. Well put down with just the right amount of body, muscle and coat. Time will help mature him off to be a real contender in the future. Just needs to settle on the move to show off his sound gait.

L&W Dog of similar size just a tad longer. Liked his head for balance and expression. Just carrying a bit more throat than 1. Good outline clean and well presented. Has all the correct angles. A sound mover. Not much in the decision, just preferred the cleaner head and balance of 1

L&W dog who has featured under me in the past. Has improved immensely. Real masculine head with good balance, width of muzzle and a real old fashioned melting expression. Decent front assembly, with deep chest and ribbed up body. Good angulation and muscle tone. Excellent legs and feet. He moved within himself being controlled at an even pace handled expertly by an experienced sorceress! Liked his head enough to award him the RES CC.

L&W who I also liked very much, he had the better front, with not much else to choose between 1 & 2, however in the final throws felt that 1 had the more refined expression. There is a lot to like about this boy especially his front assembly which is so well angulated. Had everything I was looking for with good muscle tone generally, just lacked a bit in strength of coupling compared to 1. Sound, solid mover in good coat.

Wow! How this boy has improved since I last judged him. His head has broken and shaped up offering a far better expression. His eyes have darkened and he now has refinement with good fluting and chiselling. His neck has strengthened and although he’s not quite in the hard overall condition I would like, he is far more mature. He has tightened in body and presents a wonderful outline with strong, merry and active being the appropriate adjectives. He is now near the complete package. There were one or two things that made me ponder. He has an ugly transition phase in his movement from say “second” to “third” gear where he is unbalanced, however when reaching top gear he goes into cruise control covering the ground very efficiently. I have also seen him better presented. Having said this he impressed me enough on the day to win a very competitive class where he beat 2 on top line and expression. In the challenge his overall balance made the subtle difference and I was very pleased to award him the CC and BOB

L&W. A very worthy champion. Again another dog from this kennel that excelled in front assembly. A clean head, with kind expression just didn’t have the “Christian” look of 1. I liked the overall presentation, size and shape although felt he fell away slightly behind offering a more sloping top line. Liked his muscle tone and coat, also liked his movement where he used his front anglation to his advantage with a good forward throw.
